Logs waiting to be loaded on the narrow gauge railroad in the foreground. The beds for these railroads are still found in Pennsylvania woods to this day and the small trees left on the hillside in the picture are being harvested by our generation.

Quality and Sizing Options

All lumber in this category is sold by the board foot, unless otherwise noted, with lengths ranging from 6 to 12 feet. Smaller orders can typically be shipped via FedEx when possible, while larger shipments will utilize LTL or common carrier methods. Please note that when placing smaller orders, it may be necessary to round the ordered board footage up to accommodate the size of the boards. To determine how much board footage you’ll need for your project, use the formula:
(Thickness in inches x Width in inches x Length in feet) / 12 = Board Feet.

Planning Your Project's Needs

When calculating the required board footage, it’s crucial to factor in waste, which can range from 10% to 35% based on your project's scope. For example, if your small table project requires 20 board feet, adding a waste factor of 20% will bring your total to 24 board feet. Adding a waste factor takes into account the material that you'll lose doing things like jointing and straightening the boards that you receive.

Understanding Non-Figured Wood

Non-figured wood offers a robust and versatile choice for builders and craftsmen who prioritize strength and reliability over decorative grain patterns. While it may lack the unique aesthetic of figured woods, non-figured lumber remains an excellent option for structural projects and cabinetry. It’s not only cost-effective but also available in various species, allowing you to select the best fit for your specific needs
This type of lumber is particularly beneficial for projects where the wood will be painted, stained, or hidden from view, making it a practical option for interior framing, shelving, and more. Its uniformity also ensures consistent results, so you can focus on achieving your desired craftsmanship.

At MapleLeaf Hardwoods, we are committed to providing you with the best non-figured lumber options. Browse our collection today and equip yourself with the perfect materials for your next woodworking project!
